This story would have been three stars and maybe even four if there had been an ending. I truly thought there was a glitch with my Kindle and I'd somehow lost some pages. I scrolled to and fro to check. But the story finished where it shouldn't have. It was obviously a serial ! So disappointing. This seems to happen with amateur writers.I understand the author wrote it as a prequel to something or other. Great way, author, to alienate readers who have hit upon you for the first time.
Having said all that, there's no doubt the author can write. What there is of the story flows well, the dialogue comes across as natural. Still, sadly, the abrupt finish sucks.

I don't consider this to be a short story because it is an incomplete one. The"ending" was not even a teaser to me.
